St Margaret's Cottage B & B

St. Margaret's Hope|From £35 - £40

St. Margaret's Cottage is situated at the top of St. Margaret's Hope overlooking the picturesque village.

The howe was built in 1883 with traditional red sandstone by a wealthy whaling sea captain, as were many of the houses in 'The Hope'. In the 2nd World War, the house was commandeered and used as the headquarters for the home guard. Our family purchased it in 1960 and it has been the family home ever since.

St. Margaret's Hope is the third largest settlement in Orkney and is connected to the Orkney mainland by the Churchill barriers, and has been made busier by the start of the RoRo ferry service 'Pentland Ferries' which sails from Gills Bay to St. Margaret's Hope three times a day (four in peak season), so we are ideally based for the early breakfast.

The Hope supports three shops, a post office, two pubs and the award winning creel restaurant. The village also has a nine hole golf course, an excellent bowling green, a tennis court and fitness suite. The island of South Ronaldsay has lovely walks and is renowned for its rich and varied bird life. South Ronaldsay is also home to the Tomb of The Eagles and the Tomb of the Otters at the end of the island.
