Pop in past the Maeshowe Visitor Centre throughout the spring and summer months for a series of special events.

Scotland's Photograph Album

This touring exhibition from the National Library of Scotland transports people back to a period of changing rural communities, growing cities and enduring historic sites.

The panels explain the connection between social and photographic history and give a unique glimpse into the real lives of Scottish people.

The display is drawn from the MacKinnon photography collection. It contains more than 14,000 historical photographs, with images dating back to the 1840s. The accompanying handling box contains historic photograph formats like a lantern slide and Albumen print. These allow visitors to get first-hand experience of rare and culturally significant materials.

The display can be seen daily at the Maeshowe Visitor Centre in Stenness from 16th March to 16th June 2024, between 9.30am to 5.30pm.

Peedie Pot Workshop

Try your hand at pottery-making in the Hearth of Neolithic Orkney.

Using examples from Skara Brae and Ness of Brodgar, learn how to make and decorate pots in the same Grooved Ware style as people in Orkney did 5000 years ago.

This free drop-in event will be held on 9th July between 12pm and 4pm.

Carved Ball Making

Drop-in to the Maeshowe Visitor Centre and make your own stone carved balls.

Replicate and learn more about the original objects found at Skara Brae and beyond. Decorate your carved stone balls made from clay and take them home with you.

Wall Art

Explore your creativity and connect with people in the past through art and self-expression.

Come along and draw or paint on the wall canvas, just as people in the past expressed themselves through wall art.

This drop-in event is suitable for all ages and will be held on 14th August between 12pm and 4pm.
