Orkney Storytelling Festival
25-28 Oct 2018
Various locations around Orkney
The Orkney Storytelling Festival is a celebration of the oral tradition in Orkney, with tales focusing on the history and heritage of the islands.
It has been called 'the little festival with the big heart' and has earned a worldwide reputation, thanks to its warmth, inclusivity and unique community atmosphere.
Since its relaunch in 2010, the Orkney Storytelling Festival has become one of the most keenly anticipated events in the islands’ calendar, showcasing the talents of local, national and international storytellers.
Orkney is rich in folklore with our tales of mystical selkie folk, mischievous trows and malevolent stoor worms captivating – and occasionally terrifying – generations of islanders. To hear an Orcadian folk tale, or indeed a legend from another land, delivered live by a gifted storyteller, is certainly an experience unlike any other and one definitely not to be missed.
The 2018 Orkney Storytelling Festival will be held in locations throughout the islands and guest will include:
- Heather Yule – Scottish harpist and storyteller
- Claire McNicol - from Northern Ireland, her delightful style is easy and warm and her tales from Ireland will hold you spellbound
- Local storytellers
- Nela Scholma-Mason will be giving a lecture related to Orkney folklore and archaeology
