Stromness 'Per Mare' celebrations

Stromness will celebrate the 200th anniversary of becoming a Burgh of Barony this year with a series of events and activities.
Becoming a Burgh of Barony, allowed the town to take control of its own affairs, establishing a town council and taking as its motto ‘Per Mare’ meaning ‘by the sea’, a nod to not only its geographical location but to the life blood that has sustained the town for generations.
Folk from all across the town have come together to plan a series of events for the year which share three common themes – remembering and exploring the history of the town, celebrating everything that the town has now and imagining the future. There are events planned throughout the year, but the biggest will take place in Per Mare week – scheduled for 24 – 30 July, the week after the town’s annual Shopping Week, to encourage visitors to linger longer in the town.
The initial schedule of events has been released:
Monday 24 July
Street Party - the opening event of Per Mare week with a variety of family activities including street entertainment, music and a family treasure hunt.
Tuesday 25 July
Piers Day - the Piers Day will explore the past, present and future of the Stromness piers through archaeology, historical and creative engagement. Activities include a test pitting workshop, a photography workshop, a drawing workshop and a sea life workshop The project is being put together by the Stromness Museum, the Per Mare Development Officer, UHI Archaeology Institute and Stromness artists. Wednesday 26 July
Community Sports Day - an 'It’s a Knockout' style event, for teams of 6 taking part in sporting challenges using Stromness’ sports facilities and clubs. The event is being sponsored by the Co-op Supermarket.
Thursday 27 July
A Celebration of Stromness Museum - a day celebrating Stromness Museum featuring free entry to the museum and family activities on throughout the day, including a talk in the Stromness Town Hall.
Friday 28 July
Festival of the Sea - a day celebrating the town's relationship with the sea. This will see various activities on throughout Stromness that people can take part in, right from Copland’s Dock along to the graveyard, and includes a visit from the Pole Star vessel.
Saturday 29 July
Food and drink market - a food, drink and craft market at the Pierhead, featuring the very best of local ingredients and products, including street entertainment.
