ArtWorks of the Earth
Original artwork inspired by the landscape of Orkney delights the viewer, shopper and curious in this colourful working studio and teaching gallery that sells.
Visit Stromness, Orkney and be immersed in the “heart of the Neolithic world” at the working studio and teaching gallery of Jeanne Bouza Rose. ARTWORKS OF THE EARTH is conveniently located on the main street just along from the pierhead.
Paintings, prints, and painted lampshades of Orkney’s Standing Stones, megaliths, carved stone balls, and landscapes will greet you and smaller reprints of the 45.8 by 5 foot painting of the island of Hoy will surround you. Jeanne’s artwork believes in accessible art so you will find it reproduced on cards, mugs, tea towels, magnets, and postcards that are sold exclusively at ARTWORKS OF THE EARTH. Light and colour filters through Jeanne’s collaboration with Gramble Glass who produces fused glass art expressing her colours in standing stones, reflecting the sun and moon in dichroic glass effects. This is the main outlet for Gramble Glass in Scotland.
Pre-book for a one-day watercolour print workshop, completing your own print in the “Provincetown Print” method developed in North American over 100 years ago. Simply described as the white-line watercolour woodcut technique, Jeanne has adapted this method and is calling her version, the “Orkney Wood Print.” Numerous original framed Orkney wood prints are available for purchase. Signed giclee reprints of prints and paintings are available along with smaller versions of the very large (45.8 x 5 ft) painting of the island of Hoy. Bespoke commissions are accepted for large works.
Original art in fibre, clay, stone and chocolate created by other local artists from Stromness are also available for sale. These selections will vary and are limited in size, shape, and quantity. ARTWORKS OF THE EARTH is the sole outlet in Stromness for Brodgar Chocolates. There is a selection of items sold on behalf of the Ness of Brodgar Trust, the Orkney Archaeological Society, the Orkney Storytelling Trust, and other local charities.
Chocolates and chat are free with donations accepted for various local charities.
ARTWORKS OF THE EARTH is a good stopping place along the street, before continuing on to the very unique Stromness Museum, featuring local history and the life of John Rae, the true discoverer of the Northwest Passage in Canada and after you have seen the prizewinning Pier Arts Centre.
New York painter, Jeanne Bouza Rose has had over 30 years of inspiration since her first visit to Orkney and now stays in Stromness.
