The Smithy Cafe

Simple cooking, sourced from local producers on the island of Shapinsay, and Orkney favourites from the mainland.

The Smithy cafe stands centerpiece on the shoreline of Balfour Village - just 25 minutes by ferry from Kirkwall.

Enjoy luxurious cakes and coffee, and head upstairs to the Heritage Centre for a unique insight into the island of Shapinsay

Originally built in the 19th century, the 'Smithy' was home to the blacksmiths who serviced Balfour Castle and the surrounding estate. The building has been renovated, providing modern facilities, but retaining critical features of the old smithy, such as the blacksmith's forge which is a main feature of the cafe.

Heading upstairs in the building, which used to be a sail loft, you will find the Shapinsay Heritage Centre, with lots of information, photographs and artefacts from the islands rich history.

At the cafe, we aim to provide traditional island fare in a comfortable setting, offering service daily throughout the summer to both visitors and islanders. We feature local produce heavily in our menus, particularly with baking, eggs and vegetables.

Whether you join us for lunch during an afternoon outing to Shapinsay, or experience an evening journey by charter boat to the island for a special occasion - we are confident you will enjoy your time at The Smithy.

Come and explore the island by foot or bike, with many walks and places of interest to visit.
