Ness Battery in Stromness is one of Britain's best-preserved wartime sites and a guided tour offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the soldiers who defended Scapa Flow in two World Wars.

Built to defend the western entrance to Scapa Flow in WWII, the battery still has its gun emplacements, control tower and wooden accommodation camp, featuring the remarkable Mess Hall mural. You can visit Ness Battery on a guided tour, operated by Stromness Tours Ltd; there are scheduled tours throughout the week, and tours are also available by arrangement.

Through a visit to Ness Battery you can learn about Orkney 's importance in two world wars, hear about the time when the big guns had to fire at the St Ola, and see for yourself what it must have been like for soldiers stationed in these northern climes. The tour visits the Mess Hall to see the large, colourful mural painted on three walls, thought to be the only one in the UK left in its original location.

The tour lasts about 75 minutes and you are welcome to take photographs. We are outside for a good part of the tour, so please wear warm clothing and suitable footwear.

Please note: there are no bathroom facilities at Ness Battery.

Please meet at far west end of shore road – go past the other remains at Links Battery and keep going. If driving, come via the Golf Course road, NOT from the west, whatever your satnav/app tells you!
