It's a winning combination. Land and seas that provide the best raw ingredients and skilled producers and chefs who can turn the harvest into fabulous cuisine. 2015 is the Year of Scotland's Food and Drink - you'll enjoy it on Orkney!
The clean water around the islands and fertile land, worked with dedication by local fishermen and farmers, are responsible for the fabulous food and drink visitors will see in our shops and enjoy in Orkney's bars and restaurants. Eating in or taking out, you're in for a treat!
2015 was the Year of Scotland's Food and Drink and was celebrated with an exciting programme of exhibitions, events, markets and tastings across Orkney. A time for visitors to join locals and producers to taste the very best of the islands' larder.
Orkney's food and drink is exported and enjoyed the world over. The islands' excellent reputation and profile is due in no small part to the efforts of the producers themselves. Orkney Food & Drink, a membership organisation representing local producers, flies the flag for the industry and is a great source of information.
So, what's the real taste of Orkney? The fact is you can enjoy excellent quality whatever time of year you visit. Fine dining or a picnic on the beach, Orkney has the produce to make the occasion a special one. Premium beef and seasonal shellfish, including hand-dived scallops, lobster and crab, are menu favourites. The famous North Ronaldsay lamb just has to be tried. The exceptional flavour and tenderness of the meat is a result of the sheeps' seaweed diet!
And with award-winning whisky distilleries, the UK's most northerly winery and local breweries, (Highland Park Distillery, Scapa Distillery Visitor Centre and The Orkney Brewery Visitor Centre) we should all raise a glass to Orkney!
