Orkney is a great holiday destination for visitors of all ages. It ticks so many boxes. Yes, the remote wide open spaces and the great outdoors are undeniably spectacular, but there's another dimension to the islands. Orkney also offers a wide range of sport and leisure facilities guaranteed to keep you active!
Orkney is a great place to live and today's generation of Orcadians enjoy an excellent quality of life. Islanders have access to the same services and amenities as their mainland neighbours and of course our visitors are very welcome to join in the fun.
The Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall is just perfect when the sun forgets to shine. This fabulous £15 million facility includes a swimming pool, fitness and exercise suites, sports facilities and a health zone. Not only that, there's a cinema, cafe, climbing wall and a soft play area for the little ones. Outdoors, you'll find all-weather pitches, a running track and campsite. The Centre's Active Passport, available per day or week, offers great value and is recommended if you want to make the most of the facilities or plan a repeat visit.
Many of the islands' towns and villages offer Council run sport and leisure amenities in their schools and community centres. Also, enterprising development trusts have ensured that local communities do not miss out, with swimming pools and sports halls open across the islands.
For golf enthusiasts, you'll find no fewer than five courses on the islands to test your talents. Kirkwall and Stromness are home to challenging 18-hole courses. Club hire is available and apart from weekends booking is not always necessary - just turn up and play! The members will make you very welcome. There are also three 9-hole courses at South Ronaldsay, Westray and perhaps the most scenic of all on the remote isle of Sanday. This delightful course is set in one of the most secluded and beautiful locations to be found in Scotland. It's an absolute gem!
If you know where to look, you'll find sport and leisure facilities to suit every age and ability wherever your journey takes you on Orkney.
