You know the summer has arrived in Orkney when you start seeing teams of archaeologists heading out to sites across the islands.
Most come prepared, with knee pads, rain jackets, gloves, hats, sun-cream and packed lunches – everything you need for a typical Orcadian summer!
The excavation season in Orkney officially gets underway next week (12th June) at the fascinating Cairns dig in South Ronaldsay. Then, over the coming months, members of the public will be able to see many more locations with archaeologists in action, uncovering thousands of years of history.
